Women's bone health

The Osteoporosis Program at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is designed to assist, educate and support individuals with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, commonly referred ta as “the silent disease,” affects approximately 25 million people in the U.S, 80 percent of whom are women.

Osteoporosis occurs when the density and quality of bone mass decreases, making bones fragile and susceptible to fractures. The condition commonly occurs in the hip, spine and wrist. These injuries can lead to additional health problems, expense and deterioration of quality of life. The good news, however, is that osteoporosis is preventable and treatable through an integrated program of education, healthy lifestyle habits and exercise.

Our program incorporates the most current research in the treatment of osteoporosis. The comprehensive services offered through the program include bone mineral density (BMD) testing.

Our facility provides complimentary transportation for those patients with no other means of transportation available to them.

Who should participate in our osteoporosis program?

Anyone with osteoporosis or experiencing its early symptoms, their loved ones and individuals interested in learning more about this disease are invited to participate in our program with a physician’s order.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center has the capability to provide comprehensive testing for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. With both a bone densitometer, our team can assist the referring physician with the early diagnosis of this debilitating disease.

Some people are more likely to develop osteoporosis than others. The major risk factors for developing osteoporosis include:

  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • History of broken bones
  • Prolonged use of certain medications, such as steroids
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Not ingesting enough calcium (as an adult or child)
  • Post-menopause or early menopause
  • Having a thin or small build
  • Smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • Prolonged bed rest
