Physical rehabilitation specialties at Aventura

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center's rehabilitation specialists offer unique, specialized treatment plans to help Miami patients reach their highest level of physical functionality.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy treatment is aimed at restoring strength and movement to the affected area of the body, as well as restoring proper walking, balance and transfer skills.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy assesses a patient's ability to function independently. Our occupational therapists address the physical, cognitive and mental challenges accompanying a patient's injury or condition. Our ultimate goal is to teach our patients techniques to help them return to participating in their daily activities.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy evaluates and treats a patient’s ability to effectively communicate through speech and language skills.

Our speech therapists also evaluate and treat swallowing disorders to help patients eat safely on the least restrictive diet possible. We offer videofluoroscopic swallow studies to further evaluate swallowing disorders.

Patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders may benefit from Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), a technique for improving the voice volume of patients. Additionally, our patients with cognitive issues also receive treatment to improve their communication skills.

Lymphedema management

Lymphedema is a swelling of an extremity caused by an accumulation of protein-rich waste fluid in the body. This swelling can also occur in the trunk, face and neck. Lymphedema is a result of a malformation, underdevelopment or obstruction of the lymphatic vessels. The body’s ability to drain lymph fluid from tissues becomes impaired, causing abnormal swelling.

Our team consists of certified therapists trained at the Academy for Lymphatic Studies, offering the Vodder technique of complete decongestive therapy (CDT). The goal of our lymphedema program is to reduce the size of the involved limb and help a person regain functional independence.

The following steps may be used to prevent and control lymphedema:

  • Wear your bandages at night and compression garment(s) during the day.
  • Elevate the affected limb at night.
  • Perform self manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) daily.
  • When traveling by airplane, wrap your extremity with the compression bandages during the flight.
  • Replace compression garments at least every four to six months.

Consult your doctor if you have any signs of infection (redness, rash, fever) or if you have any questions about your lymphedema.

We offer a monthly Lymphedema Educational Group, which covers topics, including home treatment options and development risk reduction.
