Aventura Hospital Blood Drive for South Florida Helps Haiti

For every unit of blood donated Florida’s Blood Centers will make monetary contributions to the Red Cross Disaster Effort in Haiti

Aventura, FL (January, 19, 2010) - In an effort to enhance the resources of blood products in South Florida Aventura Hospital and Medical Center will be hosting a Blood drive in cooperation with Florida’s Blood Centers this coming Friday, January 22nd at the main hospital at 20900 Biscayne Boulevard, Aventura in Classroom One.  The blood drive will last from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

A unit of blood expires after 42 days from collection.  Donors are allowed to donate every 56 days.  The needs of the U.S. citizens returning from Haiti and those patients who are being treated in the U. S. will benefit from donations made this week.   This time of year has traditionally been a time when the availability of blood and blood products drops to low levels after the holidays.

The staff of Aventura Hospital have also organized their own drive to collect food, clothing, and other needed supplies, and Aventura Hospital’s parent company HCA has committed $1 million in cash and in-kind donations for direct relief to the stricken area. Cash donations will go to the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.

Florida’s Blood Centers will be making a monetary contribution to the American Red Cross disaster relief effort for Haiti on behalf of every unit that we collect!

The blood initially entering Haiti will be coordinated from the Department of Defense and the military donor centers.

  • Because Haiti is not within US domain, the Department of Defense must initiate any request for blood products through the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), who would then call for assistance from all registered blood centers.
  • If called upon, Florida Blood Center is prepared to contribute available products to assist in relief efforts. Their level of available inventory currently is limited.
  • Florida Blood Center cannot guarantee that blood collected would be requested by the AABB or sent to Haiti.  However the blood product inventory supports the area hospitals which are receiving patients from Haiti.
