Arnon Krongrad, MD Performs Less Painful Prostate Cancer Surgery.

The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. These men will face an array of treatments, including radical surgery and radiation.

Dr. Arnon Krongrad is an internationally recognized prostate cancer surgeon. For the last seven years Dr. Krongrad has devoted his efforts to Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (LRP), a procedure he helped pioneer. Today he is one of the world's foremost practitioners of LRP, a minimally invasive operation for prostate cancer that profoundly reduces bleeding, pain, and recovery time. In 1999, Dr. Krongrad worked with the French developers of LRP, with whom he wrote the Technical Manual on the procedure. Dr. Krongrad then set up the pioneering American LRP program which, in his words, "allows for greater precision and greatly reduces the pain, blood loss and recovery time."

In Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy, a robotic arm holds a tiny camera, inserted through a tiny incision. The surgeon's voice controls the movement of the camera.

Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy offers many benefits in comparison to the standard operation, open radical prostatectomy - one of the most challenging operations in urology. Dr. Krongrad, a widely published author on prostate cancer, performed open radical prostatectomy for 15 years before introducing LRP to North America. One of the obvious advantages of LRP is the absence of a long incision since it is performed through five half-inch cuts, called ports, across the lower abdomen. Patients are typically released from the hospital the next morning.

Dr. Krongrad's practice is specifically devoted to laparoscopic prostate cancer surgery. The decision to have laparoscopic prostate cancer surgery is contingent upon several factors, including cancer stage and overall health.

Dr. Krongrad received his medical diploma from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. Dr. Krongrad is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology.
