Director of Emergency Medicine at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Honored as New Medical Director of the Year

November 23, 2009

Aventura, FL (November 23rd, 2009) – Roman Skylar, M.D., Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, was recently honored with the New Medical Director of the Year Award by EmCare, Inc.  Dr. Skylar joined the medical staff of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in April of 2008.  This special award recognizes his success in implementing higher standards of care for the patients and staff during his first year at Aventura Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Since Dr. Skylar became Medical Director, he has introduced new protocols that allowed the average wait time at Aventura Hospital’s Emergency Room to be reduced to less than ten minutes each month.  The ER has maintained that average wait time consistently for more than a year. In addition, patients are assured to receive their full work-up within the ER within an average of between 90 to 140 minutes.

During Dr. Skylar’s first year as Medical Director, Aventura Hospital became a certified Chest Pain Center with PCI, installing a state-of-the-art 64-Slice CT scanner in the Emergency Department and implementing new emergency response measures in conjunction with Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue to provide STENT intervention to heart attack patients within 60 minutes or less.  As of November 2009, the average STEMI time for patients is 46 minutes.

Dr. Skylar has also helped to oversee the introduction of a new induced hypothermia program, which is used to rapidly cool the body temperatures for patients suffering from cardiac arrest in order to save brain function.  “Patients who go into cardiac arrest, whether in the field or in a hospital, often suffer brain damage when resuscitated because of decreased blood flow to the brain,” Dr. Skylar explained, “By cooling patients immediately after cardiac arrest, we have seen a higher percentage of patients who have returned to normal baseline life function.”

Most recently, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center became the first and only Primary Stroke Program in South Florida to earn the American Stroke Association/American Heart Association Get With the Guidelines - Stroke (GWTG – Stroke) Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award.  The award recognizes Aventura Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment for at least 24 months according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.  The hospital’s rise in ranking from bronze status to gold status is among the fastest in the nation.

What is possibly most impressive about the innovative improvements that Dr. Roman Skylar has helped implement at Aventura Hospital is that all these accomplishments occurred during the Emergency Room’s busiest season to date.  This year, Aventura Hospital’s Emergency Department has shown an increase in volume of 25% over 2008.  The ER’s overall patient satisfaction score has risen to the top 25th percentile of the entire HCA hospital chain, which consists of 161 hospitals nationwide and abroad, and the ER has been successful with 100% of its ER core measures, a Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) measured quality initiative for this year.

“Our hospital and medical staff have seen the tremendous changes to the Emergency Department since Dr. Skylar joined our staff, and now the community is seeing the improvements, as well,” remarked Heather J. Rohan, Chief Executive Officer of Aventura Hospital and Medical, “Dr. Roman Skylar is a true leader and well respected by all, but he is also a kind and compassionate teammate.  I cannot imagine anyone more deserving of this special honor.”

Dr. Roman Skylar is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.  He received an MBA in Healthcare from the University of Miami and attended medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.  He went on to complete his Residency in Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.  Dr. Skylar became the Chief of Emergency Medicine having previously served as the Vice Chief of Emergency Medicine at Baptist Hospital in Miami, Florida.
