Patients, Caregivers and Therapy Pets Walk For Heart Month

February 22, 2010

(Aventura, February 22, 2010) -- According to the American Heart Association, Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation's No. 1 killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February "American Heart Month."

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center’s cardiovascular services have undergone tremendous growth and quality improvement over the past several months.  As a certified Chest Pain Center, our STEMI times for treatment of heart attack patients is consistently less than 60 minutes, beating the national average of 90 minutes.  Our recent Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award, this highest recognition by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association, demonstrates our commitment to following nationally recognized guidelines for quality stroke care.

Most importantly, Aventura Hospital is committed to teaching the importance of prevention.  That is why, on Wednesday, February 24th at 11:30am, the staff of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center will be joined by heart disease survivors to walk the hospital grounds to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and the importance of healthy living.  Patients and staff will also be joined by Aventura Hospital’s Therapy Pets, who will help to lead the procession.

Following the heart walk, guests will enjoy a heart healthy lunch featuring international cuisine to demonstrate ways to maintain nutritional health while still enjoying the cultural and ethnic foods we each grew up with, and Dr. Barbara Martinez, Board Certified Family Practitioner from Miami Lakes Primary Care will give a special presentation on heart disease in women.  Join us to raise awareness.
