Aventura Hospital Celebrates National Nurses Week

May 19, 2010

Monday, May 10, 2010 – The staff of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center recently celebrated National Nurses Week, honoring the nursing staff for their continued dedication and professionalism.

Members of the nursing staff were treated to a week’s worth of wonderful events, beginning with a special breakfast in the hospital mezzanine early Monday morning, May 3rd.  Events continued on Tuesday, May 4th, when nurses were treated to a “spa day”, enjoying free head, neck, shoulder and foot massages.  On Wednesday, May 5th, the nursing staff sampled a chocolate fountain and fruit display as they attended a vendor fair to receive information on continuing education opportunities at various local and online universities.

On Thursday, May 6th, the official first day of National Nurses Week, the nursing staff was honored with a special gourmet luncheon, complete with various assortments of fruits, vegetables and salads, a pasta station and a carving station for prime rib.  As the staff dined and socialized with friends, they enjoyed a special video presentation prepared by the Nurses Week Steering Committee members, who recorded multiple video messages from the physicians and directors thanking them for their compassion and caring.  Dr. Charles Shenker, the Chief of Staff, attended the special luncheon to say a few words of gratitude on behalf of the medical staff, and Karen Bibbo, Chief Nursing Officer, spoke on behalf of the nursing leadership team.  At the conclusion of the luncheon, everyone rose and recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge, a specially modified rendition of the “Hippocratic Oath” composed in 1893 as a tribute to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.  The pledge serves as an oath for nurses to continue to practice the nursing profession faithfully and with compassion for all patients and family.

As a testament to that faith and commitment, the nurses of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center concluded their week-long celebration with a bake sale to raise needed funds for the HCA Hope Fund, a nationwide fund created by HCA to provide much needed support to employees and their families in times of great need.  For 2009 Aventura Hospital ranked number 1 in the entire company for overall employee participation by a mid-sized hospital, with 62 percent of its employees donating towards the fund to aid their colleagues both locally and nationwide.

In addition to daily activities, this year the Nurses Week Steering Committee coordinated special games and contests to celebrate the spirit of nursing.  Nurses competed to match baby photos with the hospital directors and leadership staff and also tested their vocabulary with a special crossword puzzle comprised of medical and nursing terminology.  Most importantly, the nursing staff were invited to submit essays highlighting how they felt about being a nurse.  James Bell, RN, was recently announced as the winner of the essay contest.  His essay will be made available to the public upon request.
