Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Welcomes the Honorable Billy Joel to the Board of Trustees

March 16, 2010

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is proud to welcome the Honorable Billy Joel to the Board of Trustees.  Mr. Joel has served as Aventura Commissioner since first running in March 2005.  He has held several leadership positions as commissioner including, for a time, the position of Vice Mayor.  He and his wife Sandra were honored with the Torch of Liberty Award by the Anti-Defamation League in February 2005, and this past year, Billy served as Associate National Commissioner with the Anti-Defamation League.  He is also on the board of the Jewish Federation of South Florida and is an active member of the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, where he and his wife Sandra were honored as the 2009 Couple of the Year along with their friends Commissioner Bob and Mrs. Arlene Diamond.  Billy and Sandra were also recently honored with the Keter Shem Tov Award by the Aventura Chabad.

A humanitarian both at home and abroad, Billy is a Founder at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel and serves on their National Board.  He and Sandra were honored in 2008 with Ben Gurion University’s highest award, the “David Ben-Gurion Award”.  In September 2009, Billy was elected as Vice President of the AABGU for the entire Southern Region.   Billy Joel is a Royal Notable for Alzheimer’s at Douglas Gardens, a Founder at the Miami Jewish Health Systems at Douglas Gardens, and serves on both boards.  The Notables at Douglas Gardens honored the Joels in 2009 with the Forge Award for their charitable work with the organization.

Billy and Sandra have dedicated much of their humanitarian efforts towards helping children with special needs.  Mr. Joel is President of the “Anchors Away Foundation” which supplies dinghies for disabled children giving them the opportunity to sail on their own.  The foundation has raised more than $150,000 to purchase 35 sail boats for these challenged children.

“As our hospital continues to expand we continue to emphasize the importance of giving back to our community,” said Heather Rohan, Chief Executive Officer of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, “No person better exemplifies that spirit than Mr. Billy Joel.  His passion to help and to care for others resonates with everything he does.  We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Joel to our Board of Trustees and thank him for the opportunity to share in his creative vision.”
