Aventura, FL (September 25, 2009) – During this special ten-year anniversary celebration of the dedication of the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center Aventura Hospital and Medical Center reminds the community of the importance of prostate awareness through a number of community events throughout this month to commemorate National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
The month-long recognition started with a radio healthcare broadcast on September 5th featuring Radiation Oncology specialist Matthew Abramowitz, MD, Cancer Care Navigator Phil Fusca, MSW, and Survivor and Man-to-Man Prostate Support Group member Murray Mackson. This broadcast is jointly sponsored by the American Cancer Society and 100 Black Men of South Florida and is targeted toward the underserved and at-risk populations with the goal of increasing community awareness of the importance of early detection in the prevention and treatment of prostate disease. Dr. Abramowitz pointed out that prostate cancer treatment leads to better outcomes with early diagnosis and that prostate cancer affects the underserved disproportionately compared to those who receive early diagnosis.
The following week featured a community prostate health screening and educational event in which the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center partnered with the city of Hallandale Beach’s Hepburn Community Center, the American Cancer Society, 100 Black Men of South Florida and Memorial Cancer Institute. Over 100 attendees listened to physician presentations, visited health information booths and participated in a free prostate screening. Aventura Hospital-affiliated Urologist Barbara Montford, MD educated the audience on the prevalence and detection of prostate disease while Dr. Abramowitz highlighted the advanced prostate treatment capabilities of the new Synergy S System only available at the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Additionally, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center and Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center participated in community health fairs at Porta Vita in Aventura and at the City of Aventura’s City Hall where those attending were reminded of the importance of prostate health awareness. Those in need of further support and education may attend the monthly Man-to-Man Prostate Support Group at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center.
